Under the Shadow of His Wings

I love Psalm 91!

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

Do you know where the shadow of God’s wings is? Have you taken refuge under it? Do you even know how to get there and be safe? Have you felt the security His wings offer? How hiding under them quietens the anxious mind, soothes the trembling heart, and comforts the weary flesh and gives it rest?

How do you take hold of the Almighty when all strength is gone? How do you get yourself to believe there is hope when life struggles against death and there is no victory seen in the distant horizon? Can you close your eyes and just listen to His words and promises, trusting that, soon, everything will be alright?

I lay in the bed provided for us in the spacious room adjoining the chapel. I was too sick and weak I could hardly open my eyes. My mind was disquieted; in that place where the flesh met the bones, there was only trembling, and great fear gripped me. The sister in Christ who was assisting me, she whispered, “Bro. Raf texted from the Central Church and told me to read to you Psalms 23 and 91 over and over.”

Now, I knew Psalm 23. It was recited and prayed every after praise and worship in the Fasting House. I had memorized it. But Psalm 91? I’m not familiar with Psalm 91. Well, whatever. Whatever they want to read to me and want me to listen to, it doesn’t really matter, does it? I can’t take off my mind from my pains and suffering. Can anybody just take them all away and I will at long last be relieved? The sister started to read, my eyes were tightly closed. In the valley of the shadow of death, there were only darkness and fears and hunger for relief.

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler. (vv. 3-4)

He shall cover me with His feathers… There is a place for refuge. Oh Lord, my God! Cover me with Your feathers! Keep me safe under Your wings.

Just go on reading, please.

Thus, began my love affair with Psalm 91, my Savior-Redeemer-Healer’s very Word. I have learned a lot from it. His Word is powerful – it delivers and heals! By it, I was raised up from my sick bed.

The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)

Psalm 91 is huge in my life. It is my guide, my prayer, my encouragement. It is God’s promise to me and I keep it safely tucked away in my heart. It is His promise to you, too. The night before I wrote this, I sang praises to God and worshipped. And remembered. Remembered the days the power of Psalm 91 was released in my life. I remembered the dark valley, the shadow of death, and His gigantic wings spreading over me to cover me. I remembered that, yes, it is always safe there. This is my testimony.

Would you pray and meditate on Psalm 91 with me and just let God’s Word flow into our souls and illuminate them? To penetrate our weary flesh and flow into our bloodstream to give us strength anew?

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.” (vv. 14-16)

    Oh, dear sweet Rina, I delight that you shared those beautiful scriptures in Psalm 91. I too consider it one of my most valuable truths from Abba Father, Yahweh, God. Sharing it with others is a delight also. The beautiful way His Words, His Truth, His Promises, His Way is revealed in Psalm 91 and in your life, make it continue to “come alive” in me. I pray that MANY will read, believe and receive God revealed in Psalm 91 to them and their lives individually!!!! Hallelujah to His Name!!!
